One morning this week, I asked my husband his opinion on the response I gave to a question someone posted on Facebook. I was seeking reassurance for how I responded as it was a sensitive topic and I wanted to give my two cents.
While I was seeking instant reassurance, my husband responded with a couple of questions about the original post. I was frustrated. Why couldn’t he just respond to my concern? But my husband explained that he needed to know more about the Facebook post in order to better answer whether or not he agreed with how I responded.
I recognized that his need to ask follow-up questions was similar to how he approaches fixing a broken computer, smart phone, or other piece of technology. He first has to assess what is wrong with the device, run some diagnostics. And really it’s true about many things. People have to get a bigger picture of what is going on before they can give a thoughtful response. I just need to be more patient.
